Presidents' Day

I bought a mattress yesterday. It's the Presidents' Day thing to do.



It was an interesting experience. The mattress sales industry is very old-fasioned. It's all about salespeople and commissions.

"Hi, what can I help you find?"
"Oh, I'm just looking for a mattress." Buzz off.
"Ok, well, we have all kinds. Here, try this one... and this one... and this one. Which one do you like?"
"I guess this one, but it's too expensive. I'm going to do some more shopping."
"What if I got you a used one for the price you want?" Ew.
"Um, well, I'm going to look around some more."
"Why? What else do you want?"
"Well, I just want to shop around."
"But if we have what you want, why would you shop around?"
"I'm going to go."
"Why? How can I get you to buy this?" (with total desperation)
"I gotta go. I'll probably be back."

Couldn't get out of there fast enough. Bought a mattress from the next store over. It arrives Friday!

Um, WOW!
As someone that has worked in retail since I was 15 (yes, for the past 6 years) this is CRAZY.
Where did you go? That is a perfect example of how NOT to sell something.
Now, as someone who sells mattresses (well, I don't but we sell them in my department) you kind of need to get some sales help with it as it can be very complicated and with all the bells and whistles they add nowadays, it's a matter of figuring out what you really need and what you don't.
Also, DON'T skimp on the price. Seriously. You are prolly going to own this for 10 years and spend a third of your life on it. Treat yourself to something good. Trust me.
