I think I'm turning Japanese

The other day, I had a total craving for sushi.

It's funny about that. I used to never want sushi. It wasn't because I didn't like sushi; it was because Mark, my ex, always wanted sushi and cuisine along those lines, so we'd always default to that. Now that I don't have to go to sushi/Thai/Vietnamese, I love it.

There was a great sushi buffet by my house, but it was torn down a few months ago. Turns out its replacement, TORA Seafood Buffet & Sake Lounge, was added to the food court on the other side of the attached mall.

Matt, who was still in town from the Morrissey concert the night before, and I went for lunch. $16, all you can eat. Loved it!

Freebirds!

Last night, we had dinner at Freebirds! for the first time. Freebirds! is a restaurant that mostly serves custom-made burritos, but they also sell Americanized versions of other Mexican faves like tacos and nachos.

It actually opens today, but last night was a sneak preview / fundraiser. For $5, which went to a local hospital charity, you get admission to the restaurant, some schwag and a full meal.

"I'll have the veggie burrito with veggie beans and veggies." 320/365

The staff were all very friendly and eager to please. Before we left, JP was thinking out loud about having some nachos. From hearing that, an employee went and fetched us some, free-of-charge.

The food was great, the atmosphere was nice, and it's about 5 minutes away. We'll definitely be back.

Side note. I was disappointed that this didn't happen while we were there.

Best Burger Ever? Perhaps!

Matt was in San Diego just for the evening. Once I got off of work, we walked around downtown for a bit. We couldn't decide where to have dinner downtown, so we got in my truck and headed towards my neighborhood.

"If you're feeling crazy, we could go here," I suggested. Rocky's Crown Pub.

I had heard that they had the best burgers in town, but I was skeptical. Here in San Diego, we have Ho Dads, In N Out and Crazy Burger. All great. How could those be beat?

Our Rocky's burgers lived up to their reputation. Top notch!

Rocky Crowb Pub burger. Might be the best burger evar.

We each and a burger and a beer, and we split the fries. Our total was about $25. I will definitely be back.

Stone Flats

I couldn't believe it. Normally, when JP and I go to dinner, actually when I go to dinner with just about anyone besides [livejournal.com profile] xxtapemakerxx (who always has a place to go), it's very "I don't know. Where do you wanna go? What are you in the mood for?"

But last night, just seconds after I said, "I want to go out tonight," JP pulled up the website for Stone Flats. Stone Flats is sort of a pizza place, but they specialize in personal-sized portions served on flat bread. It's a lot like thin crust pizza, but it's not tied to the standard pasta sauce and mozzarella recipe. Everything is customizable (by filling out a form with checkboxes), or you can opt for pre-designed flatbreads. I had a buffalo chicken flatbread, for example.

Our total was $20-ish and that included my beer, which was $2.13. I'm not mad about that.

Sweet, sweet nectar! Stone Flats

We'll definitely be back.

The Turf and Supper Club

Last night, we had dinner at The Turf and Supper Club in a cute, old neighborhood called Banker's Hill.

Tee Cee!

It was the same group from last night, but we were joined by everyone's favorite bundle of nervous energy, Dave! He's always good for a good time.

Richard, Dave and OMG my finger

I used to go to the Turf Club all the time, like once a week, but for the other four, it was their first time. JP asked me what he should wear. I said to dress like a hipster, so he wore his hipster hat.

So, the way it works is you order a steak or a burger, and the server brings you a plate of raw food. Then, you walk the plate over to a tiny, crowded grill and cook it yourself. This is usually super fun, but if it's crowded and you're hungry, it can be frustrating.

Luckily, as a group, we're fun no matter what, so we had a blast. And maybe the fancy cocktails helped. I wanted to be vegetarian last night, but I couldn't do it. JP had the portobello burger; I had a steak. It was death-tastic.

So, how was your Valentine's Day?

Valentine's Day this year was very unusual for me. I just ended a 15 year relationship, and I'm kinda sorta on the cusp of starting a new one. Am I allowed to be happy? Am I allowed to be snarky? I say yes!

I'm feeling very anti-Valentine's today. But in a fun, happy kind of way, if that makes any sense.

Met up with [livejournal.com profile] jpinsd for a romantic vegetarian (yay!) lunch at Which Wich. At Which Wich, when you order, you fill out a form to design your sandwich. You can choose your meat (veggie patty), your cheese (Cheeze Wiz) and all of your fixins. Later, the form is reused as the bag your sandwich is served in. It's pretty spectacular.

That night, at home, Mark made us an anti-Valentine's dinner. It was delicious... but very meat-oriented (boo).

Gemütlichkeit and a blast from the past

A few weeks ago, Dave [livejournal.com profile] pinner123 and I were talking about a restaurant from my childhood called Bob's Big Boy.

I remember going there something like once a week as a kid. I even remember being too young to have the Big Boy burger while my brother would get to have it.

My beverage of choice would always be a large, heaping glass of whole milk.

At some point in the 80's all of the nearby Bob's Big Boys turned in to Allie's and eventually closed down. Then they reopened as the all-microwave-oven Coco's we know today.

With a little research, Dave discovered that there is a Bob's nearby, in El Cajon. It's attached to a Wal-mart, of all places.

It's all about the statue in front!

I had the Big Boy, of course. Secret Sauce!

We stayed for quite a while and gossiped about our friends. We both texted pictures of our food to [livejournal.com profile] njbearcub1. Could have stayed longer, but it got loud.

It was way too many calories but who's counting, right? Yay, friends and food.

Corporate Casuals! plus cheese

My dear, sweet hus-cougar Mark and I love a local band called The Steely Damned. As the name implies, they are a Steely Dan cover band. When Mark found out they were doing a rare show at Humphrey's, he bought tickets immediately.

Fast forward to last night, show's at 6. We figured, "What kind of show starts at 6? We'll get there a little late." On the way from my truck to the show, we heard them playing Reelin' in the Years. Fuck, we're late.

As we walked in, we realized we were very out of place. We both had on t-shirts and Mark was wearing shorts and flip-flops. Everyone else was wearing corporate casual.

Corporate Casuals 1

Lucky us, with admission, we each got one free drink coupon and free food. Featuring Cheese!

Corporate Casuals Cheese!

Mark: Yay!
Mike: I'm so cheating on my diet tonight!

Corporate Casuals 2

The show was fun, we gained weight. Good times.

Someday...

...I'll go to real White Castle. But for now, there's:

We don't have White Castle here on the west coast, so I've never been. I've heard some horrible stories about it, but they mostly make me want to go even more.

We're going to Ohio next month. I think they have White Castle there... :)

So, can we talk about Five Guys?

Last week, two IRL friends of mine told me about a new (to San Diego) burger joint called Five Guys, then two guys from the Interwebs also brought it up. I decided I had to check it out. I love a good burger, that's for sure.

Yesterday we found ourselves a few blocks away from one and ready for lunch, so we went.

From the start, I could tell it was a hot mess. The line was almost out the door, and I saw a lot if people standing around without food.

Turns out, Five Guys is incredibly inefficient and poorly laid out. All they sell are burgers and fries, and our order took a half hour. Fail-urrr.

By the time we got our food, we were going batshit stir-crazy, so we took our food to go. Later, we found a table outside that was, at least, quiet.

Here's the thing. My burger was good. It was really good, but for $5 and that god-awful wait, I'm going to go with Not Worth It.

What I'm wondering, though, is did we just come at a bad time? If it would have been less crowded, maybe I would have loved it. I'm curious what you guys think.

A day best described with food

The plan for yesterday was to buy and install a garage door opener. But when I heard Dave had nothing going on all weekend, I had the crazy idea of trying to get him to do lunch.

Next thing you know, we're at Rally's in Lemon Grove. We had so much fun gossiping about people we know in common and geeking out about DVDs, toys and gadgets.

I should have taken pictures. The best shot would have been when Dave got all excited about a sign that says you can get your French Fries "loaded" with chili, cheese and bacon. It was cute.

We did take pictures of our food though, of course.

Here's my lunch:

and here's Dave's

Later, Mark and I went and saw Natalie Merchant in concert. (It was really boring! Actually, the sound was beautiful, and her voice is incredible, but pick up the tempo every once in a while...)

We had sushi, at Sushi Deli 2, for dinner. It was one of the best sushi dinners I've had.

...and the sake wasn't bad either!

It's good to be me!

Kid-powered! (and a poultry abomination)

I'm kid-powered today. After a little mixup with the bike shop, I finally got my tires up and running again.

It's a 4.2 mile hop, skip and jump to work and it's mostly downhill. The ride home, of course, is mostly UP-hill. Blech. But, hey, burning off calories.

Speaking of calories, Mark and I had a fancy dinner at Park House Eatery last night.

Duck salad

The duck salad there is so good. After trying some, you will want quit your job and just eat it all day long.

The Chicken Pie Shop

We had big plans for a fancy dinner last night, but our date had family obligations and couldn't make it. So, instead, we had an easygoing dinner at The Chicken Pie Shop, a San Diego landmark.

This restaurant, which originally was in Hillcrest (before Hillcrest "got all gay") and eventually moved to North Park, is 72 years old. And it caters to people around that age, and much older. The food is cheap, extremely bland and abundant. For about $10, you get a chicken entree, salad, mashed potatoes, vegetables, sometimes soup and dessert.

Mark had the fried chicken dinner (I told him to look excited.)

Cps 3

And I had the Chicken Pie Dinner with a side of split pea soup.

Cps 4

Inside, the walls are covered in fake wood panelling, the lighting is all fluorescent and there are little chicken statues everywhere.

It's a legend!

Cps 1

Hi Ed! See?
