My dear, sweet hus-cougar Mark and I love a local band called The Steely Damned. As the name implies, they are a Steely Dan cover band. When Mark found out they were doing a rare show at Humphrey's, he bought tickets immediately.

Fast forward to last night, show's at 6. We figured, "What kind of show starts at 6? We'll get there a little late." On the way from my truck to the show, we heard them playing Reelin' in the Years. Fuck, we're late.

As we walked in, we realized we were very out of place. We both had on t-shirts and Mark was wearing shorts and flip-flops. Everyone else was wearing corporate casual.

Lucky us, with admission, we each got one free drink coupon and free food. Featuring Cheese!

Mark: Yay!
Mike: I'm so cheating on my diet tonight!

The show was fun, we gained weight. Good times.

Someday...

...I'll go to real White Castle. But for now, there's:

We don't have White Castle here on the west coast, so I've never been. I've heard some horrible stories about it, but they mostly make me want to go even more.

We're going to Ohio next month. I think they have White Castle there... :)

Last week, two IRL friends of mine told me about a new (to San Diego) burger joint called Five Guys, then two guys from the Interwebs also brought it up. I decided I had to check it out. I love a good burger, that's for sure.

Yesterday we found ourselves a few blocks away from one and ready for lunch, so we went.

From the start, I could tell it was a hot mess. The line was almost out the door, and I saw a lot if people standing around without food.

Turns out, Five Guys is incredibly inefficient and poorly laid out. All they sell are burgers and fries, and our order took a half hour. Fail-urrr.

By the time we got our food, we were going batshit stir-crazy, so we took our food to go. Later, we found a table outside that was, at least, quiet.

Here's the thing. My burger was good. It was really good, but for $5 and that god-awful wait, I'm going to go with Not Worth It.

What I'm wondering, though, is did we just come at a bad time? If it would have been less crowded, maybe I would have loved it. I'm curious what you guys think.

The plan for yesterday was to buy and install a garage door opener. But when I heard Dave had nothing going on all weekend, I had the crazy idea of trying to get him to do lunch.

Next thing you know, we're at Rally's in Lemon Grove. We had so much fun gossiping about people we know in common and geeking out about DVDs, toys and gadgets.

I should have taken pictures. The best shot would have been when Dave got all excited about a sign that says you can get your French Fries "loaded" with chili, cheese and bacon. It was cute.

We did take pictures of our food though, of course.

Here's my lunch:

and here's Dave's

Later, Mark and I went and saw Natalie Merchant in concert. (It was really boring! Actually, the sound was beautiful, and her voice is incredible, but pick up the tempo every once in a while...)

We had sushi, at Sushi Deli 2, for dinner. It was one of the best sushi dinners I've had.

...and the sake wasn't bad either!

It's good to be me!

I'm kid-powered today. After a little mixup with the bike shop, I finally got my tires up and running again.

It's a 4.2 mile hop, skip and jump to work and it's mostly downhill. The ride home, of course, is mostly UP-hill. Blech. But, hey, burning off calories.

Speaking of calories, Mark and I had a fancy dinner at Park House Eatery last night.

Duck salad

The duck salad there is so good. After trying some, you will want quit your job and just eat it all day long.

We had big plans for a fancy dinner last night, but our date had family obligations and couldn't make it. So, instead, we had an easygoing dinner at The Chicken Pie Shop, a San Diego landmark.

This restaurant, which originally was in Hillcrest (before Hillcrest "got all gay") and eventually moved to North Park, is 72 years old. And it caters to people around that age, and much older. The food is cheap, extremely bland and abundant. For about $10, you get a chicken entree, salad, mashed potatoes, vegetables, sometimes soup and dessert.

Mark had the fried chicken dinner (I told him to look excited.)

And I had the Chicken Pie Dinner with a side of split pea soup.

Inside, the walls are covered in fake wood panelling, the lighting is all fluorescent and there are little chicken statues everywhere.

It's a legend!

Hi Ed! See?
