Last night, the guys and I watched Tron, the original 1982 version.

It was at least the third time I had seen the film. For some, it was the first time. It got mixed reviews from the gang. My opinion is that it's a solid movie. Yes, of course, it's dated and the cgi is a little bit off at times, but it was very innovative for its time and it's fun.

Having come out just a few years after Star Wars, I would argue that it's noticeably derivative.
- Sark is Darth Vader, Yori is Princess Leia, Tron is Obi-Wan and Flynn is Luke Skywalker.
- Instead of a laser sword, Flynn's mystical weapon is his identity disc.
- There's one part where Flynn sneaks past enemy lines by stealing a stormtrooper's uniform taking on a soldier's red color.

Oh, and I found the hidden Mickey! It's like 3/4 in to the film, during the solar sailer simulation scene.

Thursday night is Tron 2 (Imax 3D). I can't wait!

FYI:

Tron Betrayal is a graphic novel that picks up where Tron left off and fills in some of the developments in the intervening time before Tron: Legacy.

It's a charming movie, but man is it boring. Every time I get excited about watching it and pop the DVD in, I've lost interest by the halfway mark.

Going to see Legacy over Christmas.

Oh, see, I thought it was very entertaining.
Of course, I was watching it with like 15 sassy gays, so that probably helped.

I dig the soundtrack.

Think Dave Chapelle's TRON should have starred in Tron Legacy.

I need to scab a copy of the soundtrack off of JP.

The Chapelle Show. I totally missed out on that one. By the time it hit my radar, he went crazy abd ended the show. I should go back and watch it.

"Hot hand in a dice game, babygirl!" I quote Tron all the time LOL! They cut the clip early, though - "How about a lap dance for the richest man? Yo Chuck, I got your guuurl!"

People have also made comparisons of Tron to Lord Of The Rings, and The Chronicles Of Narnia.

It's not quite as derivative as you'd think. There were supposed to be parallels.

Ed Dillinger created the MCP, but was enslaved by it (through blackmail), and also became the MCP's lackey (Sark).

Both Yori and Lora were the ones who got Flynn into the places he needed to be.

I think it's a better watch today because in 1982, which was also the same year I got my first computer), computers were still McGuffins. People didn't use them or have them. Imagining a very computer-integrated world that we all recognize today was impressive.

I can't hear a Journey song without thinking of Tron. I haven't had as much Kool Aid as Cobb, but I'm pretty close.
