A classic

It's Saturday and I have a few hours to kill, so I busted out my old Clamshell iBook.

This one was my first Mac. I loved it like a baby. It was also the first laptop that I really worked on. I upgraded the hard drive, the wireless card and the ram. I even overclocked it to 400mhz. I later moved on to white iBooks, and replacing logic boards, but that got... expensive...

Tangerine, baby. I love and miss Apple's wacky, colorful designs. I mean, I get it; no one wants to spend $2000 on something that looks like a teenage girl's makeup kit. But still, it's fun.

I'm thinking about using this badboy to stream music to my living room. It's just crazy enough to work!

Me too!

I'm amazed to see people now hating on the colours of the original iMac. I guess they don't remember what a huge breath of fresh air those things were, back when EVERY computer was a big ugly beige box. Ugh, I loathe beige... it's the choice for people too timid to pick a real colour.

I actually went with a friend all the way to Port Huron to buy a black desktop computer back in '96 because there wasn't anything up here that wasn't that same pathetic timid beige.

When Apple came out with a computer in a choice of colours, they finally made the personal computer... personal. I'm sad that aside from some designer laptops, that trend is pretty much dead. Granted, the silver or black designs which dominate now are infinitely preferable to beige, but there was something wonderful about being able to pick a real colour.

I'd love an orange iMac.

Agreed. The original Bondai iMac was so groundbreaking, and so influential on industrial design, that those colors started showing up everywhere. I remember seeing a clothing iron that was white and blue plastic.

In 2005 right around the same time I bought my first iBook I bought a Dalmatian iMac just to use as a jukebox.

That computer is mega rad. Do you still have it?

I thought they were brilliant (literally and figuratively)

I almost made the switch. I always wanted the purple one. True the lines of Apple products have always been wonderful and stylish, but the garish colours and pseudo-retro curves of the iMacs were really outstanding.

When the cublet and I were thinking about opening a shop, the plan was to get old iMacs (my hope was just purple and green ones) to refurbish and use as point-of-sale computers.

Oh. YOU shop there, too?! :)

Sweet! The tangerine was a fav of mine, but the lime color was my obsession. For years, i tried to find an old Lime iMac that I could totally gut, and put in modern components - maybe just put a Mac Mini in there and an LCD monitor. I love the lime iMac.

Dude, if I could cram a mac mini in to this iBook shell, I'd be so all over that.
