- A song that no one would expect you to love -
I had to really think about this one. I kind of listen to everything, so people generally aren't shocked if I say I like Public Enemy, Garth Brooks, Harry Nilsson, Michael Jackson, et al. But, I thought of a real doozy.
The American National Anthem. Seriously. It's a beautiful poem. I never thought much of it until I ran my first 10k. Before the race began, a little girl sang it a cappella, and it made me a little misty-eyed.
I like my country, but I'm not weird about it. Believe me, I'm no "America, love or leave it" or "these colors don't run" (blech) type of guy. I just think we have a cool national anthem.
Note: The above link is kind of a joke, but I meant what I said about the song.

Date: 2010-08-16 06:14 pm (UTC)When I was at the Bowl a couple of weeks ago with my mom and my friend. My friend refused to stand for the Nat'l Anthem and my mom said, "I KNOW THIS COUNTRY SUCKS BUT GET YOUR ASS UP! I DIDN'T BUST MY ASS TO BECOME A US CITIZEN FOR NOTHING!"

Date: 2010-08-16 08:16 pm (UTC)Ours is a silent, smug patriotism. Some days I think that's a good thing, and other times I think it's quite sad.
