Day 19. A song from your favorite album
One of the most difficult times of my life was when I was working full time and went back to school to get my Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science. Monday through Thursday, I would work until around 6, drive for an hour to get to class, then sit in class for four hours. Looking back, I don't know how I did it, and I can't believe Mark stuck with me (and made me delicious, home cooked meals every night) that whole time.
One thing that kept me sane during that time was Electro-shock Blues by the Eels.
It's such a dynamic, well-written, and terribly depressing collection of music. I adore it. Sonically, it sounds a bit like the good Beck albums (You know, Midnight Vultures, Odelay...) and also very much like Velvet Underground's Nico album. And yeah, it's hella depressing. Story goes, before he wrote the album, his mother died of cancer and his sister killed herself. Both tragedies are central themes in the album.
I'm generally a very happy, upbeat guy, but something about this extreme depression really inspires me.
Dead of Winter
Radiation sore throat got your tongue
Magic markers tattoo you
And show it where to aim
And strangers break their promises
You wan't feel any
You won't feel any pain
Going to the Funeral
Look at all the people with
the flowers in their hands
They put the flower on the box
that's holding all the sand that was...
That was once...
That was once you
And lastly, this one, Elizabeth on the Bathroom Floor
This stuff doesn't make me sad. It makes me happy. I think, because it reminds me that I'm alive and human.
