Gemütlichkeit and a blast from the past

A few weeks ago, Dave [livejournal.com profile] pinner123 and I were talking about a restaurant from my childhood called Bob's Big Boy.

I remember going there something like once a week as a kid. I even remember being too young to have the Big Boy burger while my brother would get to have it.

My beverage of choice would always be a large, heaping glass of whole milk.

At some point in the 80's all of the nearby Bob's Big Boys turned in to Allie's and eventually closed down. Then they reopened as the all-microwave-oven Coco's we know today.

With a little research, Dave discovered that there is a Bob's nearby, in El Cajon. It's attached to a Wal-mart, of all places.

It's all about the statue in front!

I had the Big Boy, of course. Secret Sauce!

We stayed for quite a while and gossiped about our friends. We both texted pictures of our food to [livejournal.com profile] njbearcub1. Could have stayed longer, but it got loud.

It was way too many calories but who's counting, right? Yay, friends and food.

Within a 3-mile radius of the house where I grew up there were two Shoney's, which was the southern states' version of Bob's Big Boy. Both locations had the Bob statue out front. I was fascinated with it when I was a kid.

Both gone now.

I used to eat there all the time as a kid. We would go to the ones in Panorama City, Glendale and Burbank. The Burbank location is still there. The only other one that I know of is in Diamond Bar. We eat at that one after Frank & Sons.

I still have a Bob's Big Boy coin bank on display in my living room.

OH YEAH!

Though I was always aware of Bob's Big Boy, in Texas (and other places), we had Kip's Big Boy.

And, really, how secret is that secret sauce?

I do so love getting pictures from you guys.

They used to have a few locations along the Garden State Parkway in rest stops. I should look into it.
