It was supposed to be a regular night. Liz and I were planning on getting pizza and beer and catch up on boy gossip.

Around 4pm, the power went off in my office. Within minutes, I got a text from JP that his power went out at home. I still didn't think much of it. I figured I would stay at work until 4:30 and read. It turns out this was one of the largest blackouts ever, as far as I know. I'm not sure exactly what it covered, but I've heard it reached Arizona to Orange County.

Blackout nothin'.  I still had my iPad.

When I realized everyone was taking off for the day, I joined them. We had to walk down 21 flights of stairs with the light of my iPad leading the way. One of my coworkers asked me what ebook I was reading. I said "It's a Star Wars book..." everyone laughed knowingly at the resident Star Wars geek. :)

Getting out of downtown was really awful. All of the traffic lights were completely out, so there were traffic jams on every block. The outage also affected the cell towers, so most people had little to no phone/email/text access.

That night, JP came over to hang out in the backyard. My roomate/ex Mark also had someone over for dinner. The four of us huddled around a radio to listen for the latest updates. On the radio, the broadcasters suggested staying home and buckling down for what could be a long period with no power.

We took turns having romantic, candle-lit dinners in the dining room. Later, JP and I ate ice cream and sat on the front porch looking at the stars and the moon. It was a lot like camping.

Between 11 and midnight, the power came back on. It was a relief, but it was also the end of our adventure.

Lessons Learned

- With all of our iProducts and computers, at the end of the day, the only tech that didn't fail was the radio.
- The iPad works really well as a flashlight.
- Apparently Mark and I are capable of peacefully having dates over at the same time.
